This hand-crafted Medieval reproduction is taken from an original mid-15th-century carving found on the misericords within the choir stalls of Cartmel Priory, Lake District. Cast from a mould made directly from the original, the piece preserves the expressive detail and humour of the medieval carving.
The subject depicts a seated ape holding a vessel above its head. In medieval symbolism, apes and monkeys were associated with intelligence and mimicry, and this unusual scene conveys a pointed sense of humour - literally “taking the piss” out of the medical practices of the period. Beyond its playful surface, the carving communicates lessons about morality, conduct, and the consequences of poor health, reflecting the didactic purpose of many misericord carvings.
Cast in a high-quality resin composite and carefully hand-stained to evoke the appearance of aged wood, this reproduction faithfully retains the craftsmanship, texture, and fine detail of the original work.
Designed for wall mounting, this striking artefact makes a captivating focal point, whether displayed alone or as part of a wider collection. Supplied complete with a wall fixing and product label.
