Chester Walls near Kaleyard Gate
The famed medieval city walls in Chester stand as one of the city's most renowned tourist attractions. Constructed around 2,000 years ago by the Romans, the Chester City Wall holds the distinction of being the oldest, longest, and most complete historic defensive structure in England.
Adjacent to the rear of Chester Cathedral lies a segment of the walls featuring a postern gate, a secondary entrance. In the 13th century, monks from St Werburgh's Abbey established a vegetable garden, also known as a "kaleyard" outside the city walls, now repurposed as a car park. In 1275, seeking easier access to their crops, the monks sought permission from Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks, to cut a gate through the wall. Edward granted approval with certain conditions, including the requirement that the gate be securely locked at nightfall.
