This fine art giclée print features a historic view of Chester’s medieval city walls near the Kaleyard Gate—a lesser-known but fascinating corner of the city’s Roman and monastic past. Constructed nearly 2,000 years ago by the Romans, the Chester City Wall is the oldest, longest, and most intact defensive structure of its kind in England.

Located behind Chester Cathedral, this section of the wall includes a small postern gate, known as Kaleyard Gate. In the 13th century, monks from St Werburgh’s Abbey cultivated a vegetable garden—or “kaleyard”—outside the walls, in an area now used as a car park. To ease access to their crops, the monks requested permission from Edward I (Edward Longshanks) in 1275 to cut a gate through the defensive wall. The king granted permission on the condition that the gate would be securely locked each night.

This print is available in two sizes:

Printed using the giclée method, this gallery-quality artwork is produced on luxurious 300gsm acid-free, 100% cotton rag paper with a classically smooth, mould-made texture. The print is professionally mounted on acid-free board using pH-neutral archival tape, ensuring it will not discolour or degrade over time. Each mounted print is carefully enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve and shipped flat in a padded cardboard envelope.
