Eastgate Clock at Night

This giclée print captures a luminous nighttime view of Chester’s Eastgate Clock, seen from directly above the historic gateway on the ancient city walls. From this elevated perspective, the iconic clock rises in brilliant detail against the darkened city, its four glowing faces casting a warm light over Eastgate Street below.

Commissioned in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and unveiled in 1899, the clock was the work of distinguished Chester architect John Douglas. Originally gas-lit, its dials have since been modernised with electric illumination and a computerised system for precise timekeeping.

Now a Grade I listed landmark, the Eastgate Clock is widely regarded as the most photographed feature in Chester—and the second most photographed clock in England, after Big Ben. The original mechanism, crafted by JB Joyce, continues to keep time today, with maintenance overseen by the Smith of Derby Group, ensuring this celebrated structure remains both functional and historically preserved.

Printed using the giclée technique, this fine art piece is produced on 300gsm acid-free, 100% cotton rag paper with a classically smooth, mould-made texture. Each print is professionally mounted on acid-free board using pH-neutral archival tape to ensure lasting quality and colour stability. It is then carefully enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve and shipped flat in a padded cardboard envelope.
