Eastgate Clock, Chester

This giclée print offers a striking nighttime view of Chester’s Eastgate Clock, as seen from atop the ancient city walls. Set against the quiet drama of dusk, the scene captures the clock’s intricate ironwork and glowing dials, evoking the timeless elegance of this cherished landmark.

Erected above Eastgate Street, the clock was commissioned to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and officially unveiled in 1899. Designed by celebrated Chester architect John Douglas, it first shone into life with gas-lit dials—later replaced by electric lighting and modernized with a computerized timekeeping system.

Now a Grade I listed structure, the Eastgate Clock is widely recognised as Chester’s most iconic landmark and is said to be the second most photographed clock in England, after Big Ben. Its original mechanism, crafted by JB Joyce, remains in use today and continues to be maintained by the Smith of Derby Group, ensuring the clock remains both a historical artefact and a living part of the city.

Printed using the giclée technique, this fine art piece is produced on 300gsm acid-free, 100% cotton rag paper with a classically smooth, mould-made texture. Each print is professionally mounted on acid-free board using pH-neutral archival tape to ensure lasting quality and colour stability. It is then carefully enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve and shipped flat in a padded cardboard envelope.
