Situated on Eastgate Street along the ancient Roman walls of Chester, the renowned Eastgate Clock stands as a symbol of historical significance. Commissioned in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the clock was skilfully designed by Chester Architect John Douglas. Its timekeeping journey began on May 24, 1899, with the initial illumination of its four dials using gas lighting. Over time, the clock has undergone modernization, transitioning to electric lights and incorporating a computerized system for precise timekeeping.
Undoubtedly, the Eastgate Clock stands out as Chester's most prominent landmark, recognized as the second most photographed clock in England. In 1955, both the clock and gateway were honoured with Grade I listing as a testament to their historical and architectural significance.
An intriguing aspect of the clock is its original mechanism, crafted and installed by JB Joyce in 1899. Notably, JB Joyce is now a part of the Smith of Derby group, responsible for the ongoing service and maintenance of this iconic timepiece.
